Our Story

Colored Criticism convenes people of color to be seen and heard in the arts. We highlight the voices of artists, audiences, and professionals historically sidelined from cultural criticism. We conduct lovingly critical conversations with a light touch and bright spirit.

Art is essential to understanding ourselves and our world. Learning about our diverse cultural heritage helps us all respect each other. Over the past 6 years, Colored Criticism has helped over 15,000 participants enjoy new perspectives, experiences, and insights about art.

We use media to create new pathways to art appreciation. Our team has filmed a web series on location at cultural institutions starting in 2015, and began work on a documentary in 2017. Our monthly newsletter provides an artistic response to current news and events. Art Off Pause started as a livestream in response to the COVID pandemic, convening a group of socially engaged curators, artists, and activists. We remain committed to engaging arts stories, now and in the future.
